The fire was magnificent, almost magical, as it appeared to soar higher toward the sky. I should have been following the crowd as they ran in the opposite direction trying to outrun this fast paced fury, driven on by the wind, but I just stood there, entranced. I watched as it approached with a hunger that devoured everything it could reach like an angry dragon on the warpath. Random flames of intense blue dancing amongst the red appear as the eyes of the dragon, darting around taking in the hectic scene before it before he sets his eyes straight ahead, looking directly at me. His great feet reach forward as he, starts to charge toward me with a roar so great it would silence a speeding train.
The heat of his breath scolding my skin as he approaches, but I can’t move, my feet are frozen to the ground, partly out of fear, but mostly out of fascination for the power of this beast that, when unleashed, will claim everything in his path as his own, to destroy as he pleases; but it stops before me. Puzzled, I look down and realise this fire has lost its power. Before it, at my feet, weaving in the ground was a slick blue ribbon that glistened as it wrapped itself around the feet of the great fiery dragon. It didn’t dare cross this watery path.
As I stood, entranced, the firemen had done their job and had managed to contain it by building an invisible barrier, a watery wall to slow it down and keep it at bay so that those fleeing have a chance to escape.
I came to my senses as the fiery dragon lost its power over me. My instinct to survive came in as I joined the fleeing crowd to a safe distance away where we could watch as the fire, running out of food, lost its will to live and slowly dissipate into reddened embers which blackened through the night as the sky grew light to dawn on a new day.
