Write: try this writing exercise.
Think of a topic on which you could write a personal essay. Write a plan for it.
- what would your theme be?
- what do you want to say through the essay?
- what research would you need to do?
- how much of yourself would you reveal?
- what would most challenge you about researching and writing this essay?
I've vent about the ups and downs of rescue; the heartbreaking of losing cats/kittens in care due to illness and/or disease, the highs when one of my charges finally gets a permanent loving home.
The research would mostly be statistics, how many animals get destroyed in the pounds daily, weekly, annually, researching how many rescues there actually are to help save the lives of cats and dogs.
As to how much of myself, as much as I'd be wiling to share to emphasize my points in the experiences of foster caring.
The biggest challenge would be revealing too much of myself, or keeping the essay from getting too boring by including too many statistics..
As to the plan for my essay.
It would perhaps begin with a minor vent about the downs of fostering, but then I would explain why I personally foster and the reasons why I foster. I would then offer some researched information and then.. I don't know… perhaps share personal experiences of the upside of fostering, and include some happy endings.
