How to introduce boiled chicken to a kitten.
The following have volunteered (involuntarily) to assist me in this instruction:
6 week old Sinatra
7 week old sisters: Willow, Gypsy, Prini
9 week old Nessie.
Sinatra:
Place food in front of Sinatra. Move fingers away quickly in case fingers are mistaken for chicken.
1. Place plate down.
2. Pick up Gypsy, return her to the plate. Repeat 3 times.
3. Pick up Gypsy, offer her a piece of chicken.
4. Remove her claw from your finger, retrieve chicken from floor of cage, offer to her again.
5. Pick up Gypsy by the scruff of her neck, offer her chicken.
6. Wait for Gypsy to stop squirming.
7. Place small piece of chicken in her mouth.
8. Retrieve piece of chicken from where it landed in your life, and place in her mouth again, this time holding her mouth partly shut.
9. Lift up Gypsy to stop her kicking, retrieve chicken from skirt again, place in mouth, hold partly shut.
10. Remove Gypsy's claws from your hand, wrap her in towel tightly to cover all legs, then place chicken in mouth.
11. Repeat steps 7 – 9 until 3 pieces of chicken, or half a tablespoon of chicken (whichever comes first) appears to have made it down her throat.
12. Gratefully release Gypsy back in playpen.
Willow:
1. Place plate down.
2. Pick up Willow, return her to the plate. Repeat 3 times.
3. Pick up Willow, offer her a piece of chicken.
4. Continuing to hold Willow, place a piece of chicken in her mouth.
5. Wait for eyes to give that reaction that says "Oh wow!"
6. Place Willow back to plate and let her eat.
Prini:
1. Place plate down.
2. Pick up Prini, return her back to plate.
3. Sit down with Prini in your arms cradled like a baby and pop chicken in her mouth.
4. Watch with amusement as Prini uses both her paws to keep chicken in her mouth because she doesn't want to waste any of it.
5. Place Prini by plate and let her be.
Nessie:
1 – 9: Refer to same numbers in Gypsy's steps.
10: Wrap Nessie in towel and feed her bits of chicken.
11: Release back in Playpen.
The whole process should take you only one and a half hours tops.
Now you can feed the other 8 foster cats in care.
…those of you who are experienced in feeding kittens.. tell me it gets easier and they eventually get used to chicken!
